Artist's Biography
We are currently working on a bio for Laurie, but here is her artist's statement.
Photographs taken on trips to Rome are the foundation for this body of work, in which I continue to explore themes of time and memory. Images of structures, altered and combined with painting create distortion which echoes the erosion from centuries of existence. Transformed over time, the longevity of these monuments contrasts with the awareness of the minutiae of our existence. Just ruins are fragments, our memories are also fragments with many layers and perspectives.
Wandering amongst ancient buildings and ruins of the Forum I felt very aware that I was but one of millions to walk on the same pathways and marvel at these structures. One can only hazard a guess at what the Forum must have been like 2000 years ago. Even now my own memories of my recent excursions are a fragmented image of that experience.
Travel anticipates the experience itself, and what is left over becomes the memory. The photographic eye is merely the window of objective experience. Further manipulation of images alters the experience once again. These remnants of former glory cross over millennia and continents to inform our here and now.
