Artist's Statement
For many years the focus of my work has been on the myths and legends surrounding the Black Madonna and her persistance as a counter-orthodox Christian symbol. Recently I have chosen to explore the many aspects of the Dark Feminine.
The dark goddess of ancient times held the mystery of the beginning and end of all life. There could be no light without darkness, no life without death. Darkness suggests the unknown and the unknowable. The Hindu Goddess, Kali, though she sometimes appears as loving and nurturing, is best known as a monster who devours babies and dances on the back of her consort, Shiva. Fearful also are Lilith of Hebrew origin and the Greek Medusa.
Using familiar biblical and mythological figures I have also explored the roll of women in patriarchal societies, a dark subject indeed.
Using these paintings, I have traveled a well-worn path and have now come full circle back to my paint and paper and canvas to the black earth of home.
