Urban Landscapes

For a long time the urban landscape has motivated and inspired me. As a young boy
in Germany in the middle of WW2 I made pictures of airplanes, bombs and smoking
buildings. Later on I was directed towards less negative imagery: landscapes of the
lower Rhine regions near Koln and Dusseldorf. What emerged were soft
atmospheric images in many colours of grey painted against the fading light of
western skies. I arrived in Canada in 1957, and was influenced by the work of Albert
Frank, whose snowy backyards and lanes contrasted softly against deep tones
reflecting the quiet Toronto atmosphere.

In Bermuda, in 1986/87, I painted a series of work that attempted to give a sense of
travel at a modest speed, in a landscape soft and garden like. Next came a series of
large green and grey canvas abstractions painted with brooms and other unruly tools
used to capture the blur left behind while traveling down Florida’s highways.
In 2001/02, I produced The Lakeshore series, where moments of travel were reduced
to fleeting impressions. The most recent works presents the now familiar and
congested landscape. In ‘Where we are Going’ (inspired by a photo taken by Doug
Carter of the New York Times), features the Beijing landscape with its ominous
architecture and streaks of traffic: begs the questions where we are going?
