Artist's Statement

This body of work documents an important facet of Jim Hake’s creative process and production. Beginning in 2005, Hake began making live action figure studies on acetate. These organic line drawings captured a sense of time elapsing as they document shifts and changes in the movement of the subjects. These studies - layered, projected and re-elaborated - have been used to create large-scale works on paper. The drawings are an important element of Hake’s experimentation with multiple form relief sculpture. They mark his departure from the modeled figure and the adoption of a more graphic representation. The move from Italy to Canada in 2008 marks the moment of the fusion between this drawing technique and the continuing investigation of modular relief sculpture. This series records this evolution and hints at the direction of future works.
